If I were in the NFL meetings I would recommend that all players sign tier contracts. All players would be rated, same as they are now. The top player at their position would get the top money. The 2nd place, third place and so on would get a percentage less than that player. I hate it when players have a great season one year (which is the final year of the current contract) After they sign this big old contract, they suck. This way if they want the top pay they would have to earn it. All rookies should get a league minimum. The team has 2 years to get them acclemated to their system, if not they become free agents. They will make millions in endorsements anyways. Even though a owner signs those outrageous contracts, they would never have to pay it, because only one player would live up to that contract.
